[DUPLICATE] LC unusable on debian wheezy

Post by CILz » Fri May 17, 2013 1:24 pm

Dear All,
This is my first post, I'm new on this forum and I am very new to LC as well.
I have successfully installed LC 6.0.0 on Debian Squeeze where it behave as expected and was fully usable. However I have since upgraded to Debian Wheezy and to LC 6.0.1 and things are now worse! Although LC is successfully installed, it became unusable, as the mouse pointer disappeared each time I hover any LC's windows! Hence I can't select any menu!
Am I missing something? Is there something I can do to fix that?
Regards,

I forgot to say that I'm using Debian Wheezy 64 bit with gnome-shell.

Here's a bit from the documentation:

"The minimal requirements for LiveCode to run on Linux are:
32-bit installation, or a 64-bit linux distribution that has a 32-bit compatibility layer"

So the first question to ask is:

Does 64-bit Debian suffer 32-bit applications to run?

And if the answer is "No" you are kiboshed.

The fact that it seems to run but doesn't work quite right is weird, but you might see if you can add the ia32 (think thats the name, something like that) libraries to your debian installation.

Well: "just for fun" I installed Debian Wheezy 32-bit on VMware Player 5.0.2 on my UbuntuStudio 13.04 box with Hardware Virtualization support (pose, pose),
followed by LC OSS 6.0.1 (it took about 45 minutes over breakfast):

No vanishing cursors, works "like a charm".

So . . .

As Livecode Linux is a 32-bit monster rather than a 64-bit monster, I suspect even with all the "twiddly-things" on Debian Wheezy 64-bit to get 32-bit apps to function
Livecode is feeling a bit like a fish out of water on the 64-bit variant of the distro.

Maybe I'm a bit thick; but I really wonder what the advantage of a 64-bit distro is unless you are a RAM-aholic maxing out your machine and apps to guzzle RAM like there
is no tomorrow.

And while I am here; I can heartily recommend VMware Player 5.0.2 for trying out distros, as, in the event of it not doing what you want you can chuck the thing
away without hosing your whole rig.

@richmond62
Thank you for your answers and your efforts to help me.
FYI, LC works like a charm on Debian 6 64-bit. Regarding Debian 7 64-bit it now features the "multiarch" which is suitable to run 32-bit apps on a 64-bit distro. Indeed, I have 32-bit apps that run very well on my box.
In fact, it looks like my issue is exactly the same as this one (Ugly font and invisible mouse pointer (LiveCode 6)) -> http://forums.runrev.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=14791, hence I changing this post as "DUPLICATE" and will follow the above one.
Thanks.
