Windows CE

Post by shw » Tue Apr 18, 2006 1:10 pm

We are looking for a program that will help us write a small application for smart phones. Our starting point is Windows CE. Is this something that Revolution can help us with?

I do not believe Rev is WindowsCE compatible.

I hope someone else can either support my assumption or let me know I'm
wrong on this. If I am correct, I can point you in the direction of another
programming language that is compatible for CE.

Thanks for the help. Actually we are starting with Windows CE because it is first to hand and we can expect the ms share of the smartphone market to grow (it's now about 5%). On the other hand ebedded Linux is about 18% and on the increase. Could rev help us with smartphone Linux?

Actually, at the end of the day, my programming partner is gearing up to do the job in C. But if we could shorten development time by doing one or two smartphone OSs in rev, then that would be very interesting.

I believe that I'm correct now that Rev is not CE compatible, so here's
a link to a language that might fit your needs:

http://dialect.sourceforge.net/

It's no longer supported by the original authors and is now open source. But
it is aimed at Windows and Windows CE. It's still quite a full featured tool
even though it's not supported by the original authors.

Thanks. The link looks useful. I will inform my colleague.

That the software is no longer supported is probably a good indication to runrev that they should stay clear of the handheld / smartphone market for the time being and just concentrate on what they do best.

That being said, you wouldn't have a link for Simbian would you?

Thanks again.

The story behind Dialect is that it was originally intended as an in-house
programming tool for Aristar. Eventually they decided to release it to the
public.

I believe that the reason they no longer support it is that they simply
moved on in their business and now use other tools. So Dialect just was
no longer needed. It was actually very nice of them to release it as
open source, as it did gain a bit of a group of followers.

So don't use that as an indicator about the handheld market.

One of the companies I know droped PC software completely to focus
entirely on handheld devices. Geoworks Inc., used to produce an OS, or
desktop environment that ran ontop of DOS. It was far ahead of Windows
if you ask me. But because it was such a small and modular system, it
was perfect for handheld devices, so they droped from the PC market.
