ANN: New dictionary

At the present Livecode 8 dictionary doesn't work on Linux, and quite nobody like the new version on the other platforms, so I wrote a new dictionary.
It isn't cool, but it works everywhere

You can download here: http://www.maxvessi.net/livecode/public ... ionary.zip
in order to update the dictionary entries, just copy the last api.sqlite from you last livecode installation.

Thank you! I look forward to using this. I especially like the ability to start entering characters in the search field and have it update almost instantaneously.

Nicely done, Max. Thanks for posting that.

Max, this is excellent work and I salute your efforts, but I object very strongly to you saying "Livecode 8 dictionary doesn't work on Linux..." This is absolutely not correct and creates a false impression for people who may be wondering about Linux support. Yes, it is known the dictionary is not currently working for some users of LiveCode in their chosen distro and some of these are very popular distros and/or spins of otherwise supported distros. I'm truly sorry you're one of those users who has encountered this.

However, the dictionary in LC 8 works in every Linux distro I have tested with the exception of openSUSE Leap 42.1 where the IDE fails to launch at all. (I find that it does work in the beta versions of Leap 42.2.) Mind you, I am only looking at distros that LiveCode does not officially support.

Please keep in mind that "Linux" is not a monolithic entity and the experience of one user using any particular distro cannot define the experience of any other user. This isn't even guaranteed for users of the same distro! While it's obvious you have only the best intention, saying "it doesn't work on Linux" is wrong, misleading, and unhelpful. Also remember that these forums are indexed by public search engines and we should strive to minimize the propagation of misinformation and FUD (which sometimes seems to be the primary purpose of the internet  )

I hope I'm not coming across as hostile or ungrateful for your contributions, but I respectfully ask you to consider this in the future when you raise issues you have with LiveCode under "Linux".

Dear wsamples, ,
I'm a very big fan of livecode (see here http://www.maxvessi.net/pmwiki/pmwiki.p ... e.LiveCode ), but version 8 is still terribly unstable.
On Linux especially on some version doesn’t start at all, in all version the browser widget crashes, there are many bugs the shows an window display "something" with no way to close.

So saying the dictionary doens't work on Linux is just an euphemism, the true is that version 8 is far far away to be declared stable or for production, and I don't want to be cruel with livecode :(

Max, I don't want to hijack your thread here, but regardless of whatever problems you are finding in LC8+, "the dictionary doesn't work under Linux" is not a euphemism for anything. It's a blunt declaration which happens to be logically false. If you were to say it isn't working in some distros or in some popular distros, then it would become a true statement. That's all I am suggesting you consider. Nuance is important.

But you are doing it anyway.
Max has put in considerable effort to help others, and you take exception to one line in his post.
Many intelligent people that have tried various distros of Linux for the first time invariably run into the "It doesn't work on Linux" issue.
Doesn't matter if it is a lack of video, network or motherboard drivers missing, or just an app not working properly -- it still happens.

...except on my Ubuntu laptop, or my Ubuntu workstation, or my Lubuntu workstation, or those of many others I know using various Linux distros with LiveCode.

Rather than lead this thread further away from focusing on Max's excellent work, may I please invite anyone experiencing issues running LC on Linux to discuss those in the Linux sections of these forums:
http://forums.livecode.com/viewforum.php?f=20

Or better yet, file a bug report so that they can be addressed:
http://quality.livecode.com/

If you've filed a bug report and have not yet seen it resolved, I look forward to your post noting the bug report ID in the Linux forum here so we can triage it and help bring it to resolution.

Richard,
I never mentioned anything about how Livecode works on Linux.
I was responding in general terms to the previous off-topic post.
In retrospect I should have not have taken the thread further off topic.
For that I apologize; sometimes I blunder in without thinking.

Paul

Max, I do want to hijack your thread here . . .. sorry; just couldn't resist writing that.

Over here on Xubuntu 16.04 64-bit the dictionary DOES NOT work at all.

On Xubuntu 16.04 and 14.04 LTS 32-bit it only works in the web browser; which stinks, frankly, as it
does not fit nicely with the rest on the IDE on the desktop, and, which ever way Livecode try to justify things,
is a FUDGE.

Hi MaxV. Nice LC 8+ Dictionary alternative, though not a replacement. I've made some modifications to MaxDictionary. Please check your Private Messages. (click user control panel at top of forum while logged on) Terry
