LiveCode Lesson "Install LiveCode Server on Mac OS X" needs updating

Post by Martin Koob » Mon Jan 29, 2018 10:42 pm

I have been going over steps to install the server on my Mac and I have found some broken links and some outdated information in the LiveCode Lessons.

On the page "How do I install LiveCode Server"
http://lessons.livecode.com/m/2571/l/56 ... ode-server

The links for the following are broken. I have put the correct links below each title.

• How do I install LiveCode Server on OS X with Apache
http://lessons.livecode.com/m/4070/l/36 ... ith-apache

• How do I install LiveCode Server on Windows with Apache
http://lessons.livecode.com/m/4070/l/36 ... ith-apache

• How do I install LiveCode Server on Linux with Apache
http://lessons.livecode.com/m/4070/l/36 ... ith-apache

I tried to put a comment on the page with this information but I did not see it appear yet. I guess the comments are moderated. In any case it would be good for the links on the page to be fixed.

I also noticed that on the page for Installing LiveCode Server on OS X the information for starting “Web Sharing was outdated. The following is incorrect as of Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
To enable Apache, you need to turn on "Web Sharing" from within the
"Sharing" pane of "System Preferences", as in the image above.
As mentioned in the Comments section of the page that as of Mountain Lion the Web Sharing option is no longer available in the 'Sharing' preferences pane.

I found the following page that suggests other applications that can get around this.

https://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorial ... mac-45240

This suggests two applications MAMP and Anvil. Has anyone tried these? Any other suggestions?

It would be good to get this information on Web sharing on Mac OS X updated as well. Can needed website changes be reported on the bugzilla web page?

@Martin: no one here has edit rights on LC's server. A bug report on this can be filed here:
https://quality.livecode.com/

@Max: What's with the thread necromancy lately? We appreciate your wiki, but we also appreciate letting old discussions end naturally without resurrecting them to advertise your site to keep things tidy here for the many folks who use the "New Posts" button regularly.

Even better, rather than replicating the work the team does, if the unique portions of your content were contributed back to the main project you'd have a much larger audience for your work.

Necromancy? That is my thing, as we all know, resurrecting threads years, if not decades after the postings  But I don't think Jan. of this year qualifies for that title, and although it is too bad no one answered Martin before now, it is nice that Max did take the time to offer what help he has to offer, and with only the OP's post, it was hardly a discussion before now.

It seems the links on the LiveCode Lessons page were fixed so the post did not die in vain.

Thanks for reviving it if only temporarily.

The length of time a thread has been dormant enough that a new post is considered "thread necromancy" varies from forum to forum. In some it's a few months, some just days. Most I've seen consider dormancy in excess of half a year to be a natural death for the thread. In the Ubuntu forums such threads are closed once necromancy draws attention to them, with a note encouraging the new poster to create a new thread for what is, at that point, a new discussion (the OP has long since left the building).

These forums do not have an explicit definition for dormancy, nor any explicit policy in how to respond to necromancy. Accordingly, I've taken no moderator action here; nothing has been removed or edited, no account penalty applied. I feel such action would be inappropriate for something so small, and certainly beyond reason for something not defined in the Forum Guidelines:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=18885

All I did was appeal to Max's good nature with a brief reminder of common netiquette. I see no need for anything beyond that.

Indeed, I also conveyed yet another compliment appreciating the value of his good work, and provided guidance for a specific step he may consider to broaden his audience so every LiveCode user can enjoy his content.

Glad to hear the lessons page got fixed, that alone is worth something

@Richard -
As far as thread necromancy goes, I suppose there are as many ways to look at this as there are people on the planet

Although I am sure you had the best intentions with your post, the wording could have come off better.

Fair enough. We all have our opinions about netiquette. I said nothing the first few times I saw dead threads being resurrected for link spreading, and when I finally did I invited explanation, took no moderator action, and even included a compliment. On the Ubuntu forums and others the posts would have just been removed. I try to be as supportive as the post merits.

I guess I could see your point *if* for example, you were looking at something like this post, which is -

Well we all could have got premium templates and resources fro free. If we had downloaded freedom app on our device. It allows to do free of cost in-app purchases
Unlike Max's post, the above post is -
  1. Posting a reply in a topic whose last previous post was from » Thu Aug 25, 2016 9:24 am (NECROMANCY)
  2. Is obviously not an answer to the post, but is directly advertising or promoting something (that has nothing to do with the topic or post)
  3. Is (I am guessing here) probably a bot to boot.
As opposed to the above, though -
  1. Max posted in a thread from this year that had no previous replies in it.
  2. He posted with a link that actually pertains to the topic of the thread (the link goes directly to a specific page, about server information, not to the home page of his wiki).
I don't know if I mentioned it or not previously, but I keep up to date in the forums through Thunderbirds RSS feeder. I haven't noticed any "pattern" of anyone in particular resurrecting dead threads, and I am pretty sure I am getting all the new posts made (mainly because I check it against unread and new posts on the board).

As far as the 'buntu forums go, I don't visit them, but I want to thank you for warning me they are people I probably would not get along with.

And now, I will bow out as we have seriously derailed yet another topic
My apologies for that, Martin

Thanks for drawing my attention to that one. The user's only post, extremely old thread, no reason for it to be there - now deleted.

Depends what you're looking for. The Ubuntu forums provide support for literally millions of people. They have a clear support-focused mandate, and they stick to it. If you're looking for open-ended social time, Facebook is indeed a better resource than the Ubuntu forums. But if you're looking for Ubuntu support, it's awesome.

My PC says that the post date is: 29 Jan 2018, 22:42 and no one answered him (Probably I live in a different time zone and dimension)
However if I resurrect posts... I'm a cleric:

More likely my post was confusingly written. The 2016 date refers to garlost54's post. The parts that refer to your post start under -
