I teach English (EFL) at a junior college in Japan. My students need to memorize vocabulary for the long term. I've tried the rest, now I hope to find the best. One of the biggest challenges is keeping learners motivated. My students love playing games on their smartphones. I'm wondering what kind of game could be created that forces vocab recall in the context of a fun action game. Is there something like that? Right now I have them using Cram free version. It has a game, like the jewel game where they match Japanese and English words. It is kind of fun at first, but after doing it for a while gets dull. Does anyone have an ideas for something that would be more addictive?

I created a couple that is being used by a local school.
Throwman: Spelling, and Vocabulary
USA: USA States, Abbreviations, Capitals more being added

You could make your own with LiveCode - action games, matching games, timed games, and others. You could give them the LiveCode source and let them customize them with their own graphics, motions and even questions/answers.

Since they are older and if you want to do something fun, give them a chatbot written in LiveCode (e.g. Siri/Alexis/Google) to play with. Each week, you could provide them with a vocabulary file which they could load into the chatbot. They could try to stump it with their questions. You could make it sarcastic, funny, etc.

Even better, let them add the vocabulary for the week along with their explanations/definitions. It could be fun.
