playing sound while game playing

I am markmy a game and I need to play sound but it won't play until everything has stopped!!

What platform? Desktop or mobile?
What file formats are the sounds in?
How do you "play" the sounds?
If you use "play", did you lookup "play" in the dictionary? 8)
Can you post your script(s)?
