Re: Is livecode dead?

You are missing his point. We get people (students) interested in trying LiveCode but when they go to the site, they get overwhelmed with choices, confused with pages that tell you nothing about the language and it’s features and get turned away with requests for logins and money. The website should...

New beginnings...

Let's have some fun... LiveCode needs rebranding, something to tell people what makes it special as a language. A new name? A new catch phrase? A jingle? Some ideas... LiveCode, the PB and J of languages. - like peanut butter and jelly, once you try it, you like it LiveCode, the language of the worl...

Re: Why do so few schools try LiveCode...?

Thank you. You bring up some good points worth discussing. We need to have more dialog not only with runRev but also other teachers and professionals. There are many approaches to the problem of getting a wider adoption of LiveCode, especially in the classroom. My original post referenced a recent b...

Re: Why do so few schools try LiveCode...?

You said I'm not sure I follow. You lead by suggesting their participation is necessary, but the rest of the paragraph is a list of reasons you have little confidence in their participation. As for installed base numbers, is it really helpful to reinforce that LC isn't on the TIOBE list? I was point...

Re: Why do so few schools try LiveCode...?

We could start such a project but it is doomed to fail without their participation. They are keeping much of the needed information quiet much to their detriment. We do not know how many teachers/schools are using LiveCode. We do not know the number of users or even the number of people that downloa...

Re: Why do so few schools try LiveCode...?

I have a great idea that would be fun and get LiveCode a ton of free publicity worldwide. They should sponsor a "Million Programmer" webpage or a "Million Programs written in LiveCode" webpage. This originates from the "Million Dollar" webpage that became famous worldwide. You can see it here: http:...

Why do so few schools try LiveCode...?

There was an interesting post in the Computer Science Educator's group in Facebook: "Why do so few schools try LiveCode..." https://computinged.wordpress.com/2017/11/10/why-do-so-few-schools-try-livecode-we-let-industry-dictate-our-tools/ It is worth reading as well as following his links and readin...

Re: creat game" flappy birds"

I am glad that you enjoyed it. It is great to involve students in the planning, design and implementation of a program. I also learn much with their questions, their answers and the problems they encounter. The scripts usually mimic the real life classes People learn best by doing. Writing a game or...

You are welcome to use the simple lessons here

which also adds more customization to it - a turbo mode, controls for speed, gravity, tracking high scores and adding palettes/subscripts for pop-up controls

Re: A way to store a permanent number from a random number

It sounds like you already know something about programming. That is a good assignment. You can't just look up the code on the Internet. You have to figure it out yourself. You're in good shape. You have enough from these posts to be able to do the assignment now. It is good practice. Good luck. Usi...

Re: A way to store a permanent number from a random number

Basic commands in LiveCode are not very different from other languages and the basic logic is usually the same. The problem most people have in coding is that they start writing the code too early, before they have completely figured out the logic. For some people, it is better to start small and si...

Re: lock objects from being dragged out of the screen

Yes, I do too but sometimes when teaching newbies, you have to step through the process in logical steps (as you help them think thru it) Some people can not make the jump to the better code in one step.

Re: lock objects from being dragged out of the screen

RATS, I tried to get there with a more universal solution before you did (Richmond). But I went back to edit it and while I was editing it, you uploaded your new stack. So your time stamp was earlier than mine. I like your idea of using variables for the right and bottom locations. It makes the code...

Re: lock objects from being dragged out of the screen

...and if you want it to work for any size card, you can generalize the tests for right and bottom. (other than an 800x600 sized card in Richmond's example) give the card a name (e.g. "main") and modify the code to check for ... > the right of card "main" instead of just ... > 800 . and the ... > th...
